"The reason for this is that an artist can't sell their music to any of the famous online retailers until they become partners. If the artist does decide to work with them to distribute their music, the distributor usually will not help the artist with the promotional work. They usually have to promote themselves because the distributor is known to not be very involved with the promotions to sell the music.
